This March, USA Sambo is sending four athletes to compete in international tournaments.
The Belgian International Open, running March 22-23, will be held near Mons, Belgium, and feature two US athletes in the sport division: Doug Fournet (90kg) and Wade Allison (74kg). Doug is a veteran sambo player and coach, with years of international experience in the sport. He currently trains and coaches at the UFC Gym in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Wade, on the other hand, received his first taste of international competition in England just last year, at the British Open. He trains in sambo, judo, sumo, and belt wrestling at Monolith Grappling Arts in Austin, TX.
The following week, Wade will be competing at the Kharlampiev Memorial in Moscow, as well, along with teammate Richard Crenwelge (68kg), and 2014 Kazakhstan Stage champion Nina Cutro-Kelly (+80kg). They will be accompanied by former Sambo 70 student Vladislav Koulikov, who will be the team coach for this event. Vladislav currently teaches grappling at Warwick Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Warwick, NY, and serves as Vice President of the American Sambo Association.
We wish all athletes and coaches the best of the luck, as this level of cooperation between organizations will secure a much better future for sambo in the United States.
